Yingst was born in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area where he grew up and attended Central Dauphin High School. He furthered his studies at American University and ended up receiving a BA in Broadcast Journalism from the American University School of Communication in 2016.

While both were still students at American University, Yingst began his career as a journalist at the news organization he and Ford Fischer co-founded, News2Share. Yingst travelled to Gaza, Ukraine, Rwanda, and Uganda while working for News2Share.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Yingst was also detained while participating in a protest in Ferguson. With aid from the ACLU, the arrest was later wiped out.
