WWE star John Cena is quickly becoming Hollywood star John Cena. After starring in the hit film “Trainwreck” and the upcoming Tina Fey and Amy Poehler film “Sisters,” the 38-year-old pro wrestler is now trying out his skills as a reality television host for a new military-themed competition slated to air on Fox. Cena confirmed his involvement in “American Grit” on Twitter on Wednesday.
The hosting gig sounds uniquely suited to Cena’s skills because it involves both talking and supporting the troops, which WWE fans already know he loves to do. Cena reiterated his admiration for the men and women in uniform on Wednesday, noting in a statement (via the Hollywood Reporter), “The U.S Military is the epitome of resolve and dedication, which is why I am so excited to be a part of ‘American Grit.’ ”
He added: “This show will not only be a challenging and fierce competition, but it will give viewers a glimpse into the perseverance and training of the men and women of the Armed Forces.”
The premise of the show is simple. It will divide 16 tough guys and gals into four teams, who each week will have to overcome some type of military/survivalist challenge. Cena’s job is to host and lead the team’s mentors, which include Purple Heart recipient and “Dancing With the Stars” alum Noah Galloway, U.S. Marines sergeant Twanda “Tee” Hanible, U.S. Army sniper Nick Irving and U.S. Navy Seals trainer Rorke Denver.
Production has already started, which could explain why Cena’s currently taking a long hiatus from WWE. The program is set to air sometime next year, according to Fox.
